Metencephalon is derived from two Greek words, meta meaning "after" or "beyond" and encephalon meaning "brain". Therefore, metencephalon refers to a part of the brain that comes after or beyond the main brain or cerebrum. It is part of the hindbrain and includes structures such as the cerebellum and the pons.
